Community rallies around mother and two young children who have been living in their car

The last year has been extremely difficult for many, including Angela Thrower who recently lost her housing and has been living out of her car in Richmond, Virginia for several weeks.

While no one wants to live out of their car, especially during the brutal summer months, Thrower is desperate to find a home because she has two young children.

“I wanna provide a home for my kids. That’s all that I want. I just want one chance,” she told WRIC.
About seven years ago, Thrower was convicted of embezzlement, something she says was a “very stupid mistake.”

“But I feel like my kids shouldn’t have to suffer because of a mistake that I made.”

Thrower has been trying to find housing for herself and two children, but said it’s been difficult and she believes it’s because of her felony conviction.

“I’ve called every community line, resource line that you can think of and I’m still back at square one,” she said.

 

 

Although she’s been placed on waitlists, there hasn’t been much movement because Thrower isn’t the only one who is in need of help.

Homeward, an organization that tracks data in Richmond and the surrounding area, told WRIC that many people are staying in shelters for longer periods of time, so when people don’t move out, people can’t move in.

“I shouldn’t have to be sitting here, crying, stressing and figuring things out when there’s a whole resource line,” she said. “They’re telling me I’m not a priority. What makes me a priority?”

Help is on the way

After WRIC aired Thrower’s story, the community stepped up.

The news station received countless emails and calls from people wanting to help. Thrower wasn’t able to keep up with everyone so she set up a GoFundMe, which has since raised nearly $5,000 in less than 24 hours.

 

One viewer offered to put Thrower and her children in a hotel, and another viewer said they’ll be putting the family in an apartment for free while she gets back on her feet.

Now, that’s an incredible act of kindness.

I do hope Angela and her children are able to get into more secure housing, and I hope this is only the beginning of a better life for them.

Looking back on much-loved TV legend Doris Roberts and her most famous role

Legendary TV and film star Doris Roberts is perhaps best remembered for her role as controlling matriarch Marie Barone of hit TV show “Everybody Loves Raymond”.

Roberts joined the show when she was 71 years old after a long and successful career during which she received five Emmy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild award.

Born in 1927 in St Louis, Missouri to a family of Russian-Jewish immigrants, she was raised in the Bronx, New York, by her mother and grandparents after her father deserted the family.

Roberts began her acting career in 1951 on the TV series “Studio One” and made her film debut in 1961 appearing in Something Wild.

She went on to star in more than 40 movies including National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Aliens in the Attic and The Honeymoon Killers.

Her TV career was even more prolific and by the time she landed the part as Marie Barone in “Everybody Loves Raymond” she was a veteran Broadway actress and had appeared in more than 50 TV shows.

Playing the memorable and much-loved character Marie Barone she was mother to two sons Raymond Barone a sportswriter and family man and Robert who lived at home.

In an interview with Television Academy Foundation Roberts talks about her role as domineering mother Marie Barone and how much she brought to the character.

“It’s wonderful writing but I also credit myself because she is the virago, if you play her that way,” she said.

“She is a control freak, a pain in the neck…she’s so many things that are annoying but I made you laugh.”

The sitcom aired on CBS from 1996 to 2005 with a total of 210 episodes.

During her time playing this wonderful character Roberts still appeared in other TV shows including “The King of Queens”, “Grey’s Anatomy” and Law & Order.

 

Roberts acted right up until the end appearing in mockumentary web series “Adam Astra Casting” about how actors get cast in TV released in 2016 shortly before her death.

The award-winning actress passed away on April 17, 2016, at age 90, after a stroke. Before that, she had also suffered from pulmonary hypertension for many years.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” star Ray Romano said at the time: “Doris Roberts had an energy and a spirit that amazed me,” as per USA Today

 

“She never stopped. Whether working professionally or with her many charities, or just nurturing and mentoring a young, green comic trying to make it as an actor, she did it all with such a grand love for life and people and I will miss her dearly.”

Woman strapped to her seat with duct tape after trying to open plane door mid-flight

A woman had to be strapped to her seat with duct tape on an American Airlines flight after she tried to open a door on the plane mid-flight.

The passenger, who hasn’t been named, was on the flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Charlotte on July 6 when she attempted to open the front boarding door while the plane was in the air.

According to Business Insider, the commotion started one hour into the two-hour flight when “all flight attendants were running up and down the aisles, frantically kind of like whispering to each other.”

 

“She was saying, ‘I need to get off this plane,’ and she went up to the exits and started banging on the doors, saying, ‘You need to let me off this plane!’” as per the article citing @lol.ariee.

The woman had to be restrained in her seat using duct tape so the flight, carrying 190 passengers, could land safely.

A  video posted to TikTok shows the woman in visible distress and calling out while being restrained as passengers left the plane at the Charlotte airport.

The woman was transported to a hospital for evaluation after the flight landed safely at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the airline said.

 

An American Airlines spokesperson told Business Insider in an emailed statement: “[The woman] attempted to open the forward boarding door and physically assaulted, bit, and caused injury to a flight attendant. We applaud our crew for their professionalism and quick effort to protect those on board.”

The airline has placed the woman on American’s “internal” no-fly list pending investigations, according to FOX News.

It’s typically physically impossible to open a plane door mid-flight, American Airlines as there are thousands of pounds of pressure pushing on the door, as reported by the Charlotte Observer.

I can’t imagine how terrifying this must have been for the staff and passengers on board and it seems some imagination was required to ensure this woman didn’t harm herself or others.

Toddler’s fascination with the neighborhood sanitation worker makes for the sweetest friendship

The most unlike friendships are at the same time the most beautiful ones. A sweet 2-year-old boy named Deacon Ross made friends with the garbage collector Oladele Olurunrinu, known as O’Dee.

O’Dee picks up the trash from the Ross family every Friday, and the toddler is eagerly waiting for each encounter with his favorite friend.

“He’s really just struck up this friendship with O’Dee. Looks forward to Fridays,” Deacon’s mom, Summer, told WFAA ABC 8. “I think this is Deacon’s first friend [where] he really understands what friendship is.”
When someone asks Deacon who his best pal is, he’s screaming: “Oooooo Deee.” In fact, he loves being around O’Dee so much that he wants his future brother to be called like that.

O’Dee would see Deacon waiting for him in front of his Texas home, but he had no idea just how much the little guy was fascinated with him. “I didn’t know, but I can see it,” he said.

Unfortunately, the Ross family is soon moving to a bigger house and that means Deacon and O’Dee won’t be seeing each other.

“O’Dee! Him coming! Him coming, him coming. Collect our garbage!” Deacon said when he saw his friend for the last time.

In order to express her gratitude to O’Dee, Susan decided to throw a goodbye party. She prepared bags with gifts and candies for O’Dee and his colleagues and Deacon couldn’t wait to give them to them.

The two friends had some fun time for the last time and O’Dee said he will miss the Ross children so very much.

“I was teary the whole time,” Summer said. “Just trying to relish the moment.”

One person who stumbled upon this uplifting story and who works as a waste management driver took the time to comment. “As a driver for Waste Management, I can tell you from personal experience this is the highlight of my day when the little ones come out and talk to us, watch the truck, give us water, snacks. I love being able to light up their day with the air horn, or letting them watch the truck ‘eat the trash’ as they say,” he wrote.

Great Robin Williams made Koko the Gorilla laugh for the first time in 6 months after the death of her childhood playmate

Koko, the gorilla we all loved so much, was one of the few apes that was able to communicate using Gorilla Sign Language, a modified version of the American Sign Language. But she became even more popular after she made friends we the man who will always be remembered not only as one of the greatest actors of all time, but an amazing humanitarian who made many laugh too, one and only Robin Williams.

The first encounter between Koko and Robin, that later turned into a special friendship, took place back in 2001.

Speaking of the unique opportunity to be around Koko, late Robin said, “I recently had a mind-altering experience communicating with a gorilla. Her name is Koko.”

Why Robin made a choice to pay Koko a visit in the first place was because he cared about others so very much and was always to go above and beyond to see both people and animals thriving. He learned Koko was devastated and depressed after her playmate died, so Robin somehow knew he could make a change in her life, and he was right.

Six months after she lost her childhood friend, Koko laughed for the first time when she met Robin.

The video of the two meeting is incredible. They look at each other and sit next to one another, holding hands and laughing.

“Notice that Robin made Koko smile — something she hadn’t done for over six months, ever since her childhood gorilla companion, Michael, passed away at the age of 27,” said Francine Patterson, Koko’s caregiver. as reported by Today.

Everyone could say they had fun and a huge impact on one another. Koko tried Robin’s glasses and “stole” his wallet.

“Robin’s ability to just ‘hang out’ with Koko, a gorilla, and in minutes become one of her closest friends, was extraordinary and unforgettable,” Patterson said. “But not only did Robin cheer up Koko, the effect was mutual, and Robin seemed transformed.”

“We shared something extraordinary – laughter. Koko understands spoken English and uses over a 1,000 to share her feelings and thoughts about daily events, life, love, even death,” Robin said at the time.

Koko was born at the San Francisco zoo and spend her whole life around humans whom she loved. Her caregivers reported that when she heard of Robin’s tragic passing, she signed, “cry.”

Koko truly was a very special animal. Experts who got to work with her said her intelligence matched that of a 3-year-old child. She understood around 2,000 words of spoken English and expressed human-like behavior.

“Through mastery of sign language—the familiar hand speech of the deaf—Koko has made us, her human companions, aware not only that her breed is bright, but also that it shares sensitivities commonly held to be the prerogative of people,” Patterson said.

One of the most famous photographs of Koko which brought her even greater popularity is the one where she was posing with a camera, taking picture of herself in the mirror, which was on the cover of the National Geographic magazine published in 1978.

What was even more incredible about this world-famous ape is that she had a cat pet that she took care of and raised like her own child, named All-ball. “The cat was a Manx and looked like a ball,” said Ron Cohn, a biologist with the foundation. “Koko likes to rhyme words in sign language.”

Once, Koko ripped a steel sink from the wall and signed, “the cat did it.” The relationship between Koko and All-ball is still dubbed as one of the most unusual and sweetest friendships between animals of different kind.

Koko passed away in 2018, at the age of 46. Rest in peace sweet Koko, you will be dearly missed.

U.S. soldier snapped standing to attention in the pouring rain

Many times in life, we experience certain difficulties and get disappointed by those around us, and then out of the blue, something or someone comes along our way and restores our faith in humanity.

Erin Hester shared an amazing story with Love What Matters and we are all stunned by the touching and unselfish act of the soldier this woman stumbled upon on a rainy day.

She was sitting at a stoplight when she saw a funeral procession on the opposite line. And while many people who were driving didn’t even notice the procession, one person pulled over, got out of his vehicle, and paid the deceased person respect.

“I was so completely touched by this today. A funeral procession was passing by and this soldier got out of his jeep to stand at attention in the pouring rain,” Hester wrote.

“I always get frustrated when I see cars that don’t pull to the side and stop for a procession, but this gentlemen went above and beyond. I feel pretty confident that there isn’t a military rule that soldiers have to do this.

This made my heart happy to see the amount of respect that this gentleman showed a family that he doesn’t even know.”

The poring rain didn’t stop this military man from doing the right thing. He showed us that these little things are what makes us all humans. In the world that slowly becomes a place of cold-hearted and emotionless creatures whose only job is to follow strict schedules and make money, seeing someone showing compassion warms our hearts and reminds us that humanity isn’t dead.

Once Hester’s photo went viral, thousands of people praised the soldier’s act. He was later located by WHAS11 and identified as Col Jack L. Usrey, the Senior Army Advisor of the Tennessee Army National Guard.

However, when he learned how his act was praised by many, he said: “I also owe it to my parents, Jim and Judy Usrey, from Martin, TN. They taught me to do this from when I have memory.

“I’m humbled and surprised at the reaction to such a simple gesture. My first thoughts were about how the bad weather can’t be helping how the family feels and I was hoping my small action would let them know we care.”

This incredibly successful man with spiky blonde hair and goatee has built a food empire all thanks to his passion and talent and his loving wife who has supported him every step of the way.

Fieri’s story with food started when he was just a 10-year-old boy. Back in the day, he built and operated his own pretzel cart. This was his first step towards building a successful career in the food industry. It also helped him learn a thing or two about running a business and along with his talent, it was a win-win combination. The pretzel cart later had even more important role in the life of Fieri who founded the Pretzel Cart Project and provided children’s organizations with pretzel carts. This helped the little ones learn now to cook and how to run a business themselves, just the way Fieri did.

As he always knew he wanted to be a chef, during his studies at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, where he earned a degree in Hospitality Management, he held several positions at different restaurants before he started working at Stouffer’s restaurant.

In 1996, Fieri opened his first restaurant, Johnny Garlic’s, together with his friend Steve Gruber. This was a huge thing for Fieri, but what truly changed his life took place some for years earlier, when he met his future wife Lori.

 

The serendipitous encounter took place while Fieri worked at a restaurant in Long Beach, California, when a former employee and her friend, who would steal his heart, entered the place to grab something to eat. Lori was about to go on a trip to San Diego that day, but she never left. Three years later, the couple married and welcomed their son Hunter a year later. Their second son, Ryder, was born in 2005.

Although he was already very successful as a chef by 2005, Lori encouraged him to compete on the TV show The Next Food Network Star.

“I said, ‘Listen, this is the opportunity of a lifetime,” she recalled. “If you don’t try, you’ll never know. You need to go.’” He hesitated at first, but decided to send a video and went to the audition, and the rest is history. Fieri won the show and his name is up until this day associated with great food and awesome cooking skills. “If I could go back and relive that whole experience again, I would,” Lori says. “It was such a high.”

Getting a star on the Wall of Fame speaks of Fieri’s popularity in the food industry more than we can ever say.

Fieri’s son Hunter is interested in working along his famous dad and holds the same passion as the chef. He already held a few jobs in some of the restaurants but started by washing the dishes before he got inside the kitchen as a cook.

“My dad opened his first restaurant when he was 28. It’s crazy. I want to have the most knowledge that I can before I go and open a personal restaurant like that,” Hunter told the New York Post. It’s obvious that young Hunter is fascinated by his dad and wants to reach his success in the years to come. We hope his dream will come true one day.

At the moment, besides running his restaurants, Fieri is doing something truly wonderful for those affected by the pandemics. Together with the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, Fieri managed to raise over $20 million for restaurant workers who lost their jobs amid the crisis.

Humphrey Bogart’s son speaks of his father’s passing and how he’s keeping his legacy alive

The cult hero of the American cinema and the actor who helped shape an era in the film industry, Humphrey Bogart, remains a true legend years after his death.

He was born on Christmas Day in 1899 in a wealthy New York family. His father was a surgeon and his mother, whom he later described as a hardworking woman who didn’t show much love, was a painter.

Before he started his stage career, Bogart served in the United States Navy at the end of World War I. He moved to film, but his appearances in the movies between 1930 and 1934 didn’t caught the attention of many directors and producers, so Bogart turned to the stage before he would finally make a name for himself; a name which stands for one of the most prominent actors ever. In fact, his career had such a deep impact on Hollywood that in 1999, the American Film Institute selected him as the greatest male star of classic American cinema.

Most of the roles he played are part of films that are still considered classics. Just think of The Maltese Falcon and The African Queen.

In the iconic Casablanca, Bogart played the role of night club owner Rick Blaine and starred alongside stunning Ingrid Bergman. The number of movies handsome Bogart starred in is over 80 during the course of his career.

He was married four times, with his last wife Lauren Bacall, whom he considered the love of his life, staying together until his passing in 1957. The two had two children together, son Stephen and daughter Leslie.

Great Humphrey Bogart died of esophageal cancer. He had undergone a surgery but never recovered. Speaking of his last days, his wife wrote in her memoir how he started looking as a completely different person, with his hand and arm being “swollen to four times their normal size” and a “terrible black thing placed in his mouth to keep him from swallowing his tongue.”

According to his doctor, Michael Flynn, Bogart put his hand on the arm of wife Lauren Bacall and said “goodbye, kid,” and that was it.

His funeral was attended by over 3,000 people, with all the celebrities of the time being there to say their last goodbye, among which Audrey Hepburn, Judy Garland, Ronald Reagan, Bette Davis, Joan Fontaine, Marlene Dietrich and Errol Flynn.

Humphrey’s Stephen Humphrey Bogart is a famous writer, producer, and businessman. Over the years, he spoke a lot of his father and what it is like being the son of the greatest American actor. Stephen was just eight years old when his father died and he wasn’t fully aware of the popularity his dad enjoyed.

Stephen recalls how his dad always put his family first and despite being busy filming, he would always find the time to be with his wife and kids. “He would take me down to the Santana,” he told Fox News. “Eventually, finally, when I learned how to swim, we would go out on the boat. I remember going to Catalina Island and swimming back to the Santana. I made it and he was very proud of me at that time because he knew that I knew how to swim. That kind of pride sticks with you.”

He also spoke of the time he couldn’t go anywhere without paparazzi following his every step.

“They came at me like a gang of big kids, taking my picture without even asking,” Stephen wrote according to The New York Times.

“I didn’t want my picture taken anymore. But now at the church, after the funeral, I knew how to stop them, I thought. I would simply put my hands over my face so they couldn’t see me, and they would not take my picture.”

Stephen is still doing his best to keep his dad’s legacy alive. He runs the page Humphrey Bogart Estate’s Facebook Page and is working closely with the Esophageal Cancer Action Network.

“It’s great films, great writing. He was an excellent, great actor and everything just sort of came together. It’s like being Elvis Presley’s kids. How do you quantify that? You can’t, really. It’s just an amazing thing to me and it’s an amazing thing that my mother and my father are my mother and my father. I mean, “oh you’re Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall’s kid?” I don’t think that way, but it is pretty amazing that somebody is their child and that that somebody is me,” he told Cinema Fanatic.
