Duck Visits Same 7th-Storey Balcony To Hatch Ducklings Two Years In A Row

A nesting mother duck has returned to the same nesting spot as the previous year, much to the delight of the quarantined owner of the flat

Image

During the first covid lockdown in London, Johanna Kolerski-Bezerra noticed a mother duck who had set up camp on her seventh-floor balcony.

The East-London block of flats is known for its urban feel and is certainly not the place you would expect a duck to raise its ducklings.

Johanna named the mother duck Carmen, and she welcomed the distraction in such unprecedented times.

One year on, after the lockdown was enforced again in 2021, the mother returned to the same spot to reclaim it.

This time, Carmen brought a male duck, who Johanna presumed to be the ‘baby-daddy.’ “The first time we saw an egg it was a real surprise,” she explains.

“How can a duck lay an egg on a seventh-floor balcony in a very urbanized area?! The second time around was a mixed feeling. We were happy to have her back but dreading the intense cleaning that comes after the ducklings.”

Johanna documented the whole process on Twitter. This showed the mother preparing her nesting materials, plucking leaves and her own feathers to keep the eggs warm.

Six weeks later, the eggs began to hatch, “The new thing we learnt this year was to call for help,” says Johanna. “Getting a duck and ducklings off a balcony is hard!”

“Two volunteers from the Swan Sanctuary—Gill & Andy—came, and without them we couldn’t have done it. All of us took the duck family to the nearest pond, Waterglade, in the East Village.”

So it is a happy ending for Carmen and her new family, now we wait to see if she will return next year!

Baby Beaver Gets Rescued, Ends Up Building ‘Dams’ In Rescuer’s Home Using Random Household Items

If it wants to build a dam, it will find a way. It will use items around the house like pillows, tissues, buckets, and whatever else is in its path!

Meet Beave, the local neighborhood rescue beaver who has been living with Nancy since May 2020 when he was only 3 weeks old.

Despite there being many animals who have come through these doors for rehabilitation and have been released back into the wild, beavers are different.

In the wild, they would stay with their family for about 2 years, this is when they learn everything they need to know to be independent.

This means Beave needs to undertake his own rehabilitation program which he will complete over the course of 2 years.

Other than learning how to be an adult, Beave also does what beavers do best, build dams!

“Beave is just starting to dam with household objects, but has not yet started outside or in water,” says Nancy. “He dams pretty much every evening. When I clean it up, he just rebuilds!”

He builds dams using everything from metal racks to plungers and pillows, essentially anything he can get his paws on.

Toilet mats, brushes, boxes, blocks, plungers, cloth, and more are used to build one of his doorway dams.

“The most challenging part about rehabbing a beaver is trying to teach him to learn all the things his parents would teach him. He does chew everything in the house, but with each rehab, there are unique challenges.”

Beave now has his very own TikTok channel dedicated to his life, currently, he has over 1.4m followers with over 33m likes.

It seems lots of people are interested in Beave and his life, especially his dam-building videos which often get tens of thousands of likes.

A Little Girl Learns A Lesson From The Family Pit-Bull

Given the horror stories that are routinely covered by the media, it’s easy to understand how people with no personal experiences with pit bulls could think they are all ticking time bombs. Greg Heynen was one of them. Until he saw the amazing thing that his wife’s dog Zack did after his daughter was born…

This is Greg’s story:

My wife and I owned two dogs that we had owned before we met and brought into the marriage. Her dog was a pit bull/labrador cross named Zack, and he hated me. When our daughter was born, I said to the wife, “If he so much as nips at the baby, he’s gone.”

We brought our daughter home in a car seat, and both dogs sniffed and licked her, tails wagging. I had to pull Zack away from her because he wouldn’t stop licking her. Zack immediately became my daughter’s protector, and when she was lying on a blanket on the floor, he always had to have one foot on the blanket.

Zack loved my daughter immensely, and when she became a little older always walked her to bed, and then slept on the bed with her. He somehow knew whenever it was time to go upstairs, and he would wait at the foot of the stairs for her, and then follow her up to bed.

Zack was poisoned by some dirtbag neighbor kids, and we had one of the worst days of our lives. Watching my daughter say goodbye to him as he laid still on the kitchen floor, my wife and I were both sobbing.

At 8:00 that night, my daughter walked to the stairs to go to bed. At that moment, all three of us realized what was about to happen. After 5 years, she didn’t have Zack to accompany her upstairs. She looked at her mother and me with a look of horror and panic.

It was at that moment that my dog, who loved my daughter dearly but was not in Zacks league, stood up, walked over to her, and nudged her with his head. He put his foot on the stairs and looked up at her. They walked up to the bed, with my daughter holding tightly to his neck.

For the next 6 years, until he died, Sam waited for her by the stairs each night.
