Penguin swims 2,000 miles to be with his rescuer

While most people have cats, dogs or birds as pets, Joao Pereira de Souza, 71, of Brazil, has a penguin pet of sorts, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In 2011, Pereira de Souza found JinJin, a Magellanic penguin lying on a beach covered in oil  near Rio de Janeiro.  He took the bird home, cleaned it up, fed it, and gave it a place to recover, according to the Independent.
While this type of penguin is usually a cold water bird, it is not unusual for them to find their way to warmer waters, what is unusual is that JinJin keeps returning, according to the Independent.
“… he stayed with me for 11 months and then just after he changed is coat with new feathers he disappeared … Everyone said he wouldn’t return but he has been coming back to visit me for the past four years. He arrives in June and leaves to go home in February, and every year he becomes more affectionate as he appears even happier to see me,” Pereira de Souza told the Independent.
JinJin wags his tail and honks when he sees Pereira de Souza. The penguin also gets territorial if other animals try to approach Pereira de Souza, according to a video by the Wall Street Journal.  Although it’s technically illegal for anyone to keep a penguin as a pet in Brazil, authorities have let these two alone because of his help in rescuing the penguin, according to the Independent.

Man spots dying bear while hiking, risks jail time to save bear’s life

In March 2017, Corey Hancock went hiking in the Elkhorn Mountains near the Santiam River Trail in Oregon. He was planning on taking some photos of the surrounding landscape, but what he encountered was not what he expected to see.

Hancock unexpectedly came across a baby black bear who appeared to be sick and hardly breathing. “It was laying on its back, barely moving. It twisted a couple of times. Its paws weren’t moving. It wasn’t breathing. It was dying,” Hancock told Oregon Live.

In this Facebook post, Hancock stated, “He seemed, by all appearances, to be dead. His lips were blue. His eyes were open but unmoving and hazy. The rain was pouring down, drenching his belly. I might have seen a shallow breath.”

After determining that there wasn’t a mother bear hovering nearby, Hancock realized that he was this little bear’s only hope. He wrapped the bear up in his flannel and ran a mile and a half back to his car. While rushing to a nearby veterinarian’s office, Hancock had to pull over twice to resuscitate the bear when he stopped breathing.

When the veterinarian refused to treat a wild animal, Hancock turned to the Turtle Ridge Wildlife Center for help. A center employee placed the bear, whom Hancock dubbed “Elkhorn,” on a heating pad, massaged his deep tissues, and gave him several rounds of fluids. By 6:00 s.m. the next morning, Elkhorn was moving around and, according to Hancock, was “growling and biting his cage.”
Charles Harmansky-Johnson of Turtle Ridge called Hancock a “hero” for his actions. Unfortunately, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) didn’t feel the same way. In Oregon, it is illegal to remove a young animal from the wild, and for his efforts to save Elkhorn, Hancock faced some criticism, a potential $6000 fine, and possible jail time.
Thankfully, the ODFW gave Hancock a warning instead of a criminal citation because Hancock had acted with the intention of saving the bear’s life.
As for little Elkhorn, he is now at the PAWS Wildlife Center in Lynwood, Washington, where he will be able to grow up in a natural environment without human interference. Best of all, Elkhorn won’t be alone! A rescued female cub is keeping him company at PAWS, and both cubs will have the opportunity to mature together.
Hancock hopes someday to run into Elkhorn again in the wilderness where this beautiful wild animal belongs. On his Facebook page, Hancock wrote: “So thankful you’re ok Elkhorn. I won’t ever forget you little buddy. Hope you grow strong and get back into the wild where you belong. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll cross paths again. Northern Cascades perhaps?”

“I Just Can’t Wait To Be A King”- Lion Cub Challenges His Dad In Heart-Warming Wrestling

When lion cubs are born, their mothers often keep them away from male lions (including their fathers) because they might hurt them. This cub, however, bravely comes to his massive dad, and without fear challenges him in a small fight.

The rare yet interesting sight was caught on camera by photographer Jason Kandume when he was on a business trip in Namibia’s Etosha National Park. It took place near a waterhole where rhinos were drinking water.

“I was at the waterhole to photograph some rhinos the night before when I heard some lions roaring, so I knew they wouldn’t be too far from the area,” said Kandume.

“I wasn’t surprised that we found the family because that’s one of the reasons I chose to go to the park at that time of year, in November, because it’s not long after the lions have their babies.”

The family, including a baby adorable lion cub and his majestic parents, came to the lake to end their thirst. The tiny cub was wrestling with some dirt next to his mother, but maybe he thought playing alone wasn’t funny enough. And what happened next was such a heart-warming sight. The camera caught him rushing to his dad, jumping on his back and swiping at his face. They even started a little fight. The mischievous child continued to launch swipes at his father although the fierce lion showed his teeth.

“The male lion went to drink first and when it finished, the cub started running towards his dad. It was climbing over him and jumping on his back. One of the females was constantly following the cub,” the photographer shared.

Luckily, the lion cub was able to escape safely before his dad threw a tantrum on him. Maybe the father was in good mood in the morning, or he understood that his child just couldn’t wait to be a king. Enormous Rescued Gorilla Having A Great Time With His Tiny Buddy

When it comes to an unlikely friendship, wildlife never ceases to amaze. And a massive 450-pound gorilla sharing some tender moments with a 0.5-pound wild bushbaby is definitely a sight to behold.

Over 300 rescued animals live at Ape Action Africa, Cameroon – a sanctuary dedicated to the conservation and protection of endangered primates like gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys. Bobo the Western Lowland Gorilla is among the first residents at the center, founded back in 1996. The huge male arrived at the sanctuary when he was only 2-year-old, after losing his mom due to poaching. And back then, Bobo was far from the strong dominant male he’s now.

Even though he’s such a fearless-looking creature, Bobo is nothing but a gentle giant. And recently, his gentleness blown away even the caretakers at the sanctuary. While on their morning checks, the caretakers could not believe their eyes when they saw Bobo sharing an adorable moment with his newest and the most unusual friend – a wild bush baby.

“Our silverback gorilla Bobo made a surprising new friend this week — a wild bush baby!” Ape Action Africa wrote in a Facebook post. “Caregivers discovered him cradling the tiny primate during their morning checks, and were amazed to see him handling it with the utmost care.”

Most likely the tiny creature had been living inside Bobo’s group enclosure. But even so, it’s quite fascinating to watch it interacting in such a friendly manner with its giant neighbors. “The bush baby showed no fear of Bobo,” Elissa O’Sullivan, spokesperson for Ape Action Africa told Bored Panda. “He moved around his body and spend his time hopping around in an open grassy area, before choosing to return to Bobo.”

Wild bushes are normally nocturnal animals, so watch a bush baby hanging with a bunch of gorillas in full daylight, was even more fascinating for the caretakers. “Bush babies are usually nocturnal, so it is very rare to see one during the day,” a staff member said. “We have never witnessed a wild primate interacting with a rescued one at Mefou Sanctuary.”

The other gorillas – three females and three young males, soon became very interested in Bobo’s new friend. However, Bobo suddenly became overprotective with his tiny companion and he kept his group away from it. “Bobo’s group-mates were desperately curious, particularly his favorite female Avishag, but he kept them all at a distance, making sure that no one disturbed his new friend,” the sanctuary wrote. “The little bush baby was happy to play in Bobo’s arms, hopping off to explore the grass nearby, before returning to Bobo’s hand.”

A picture of a rare dog breed has gone viral after being posted on Instagram few days ago. This picture caused the internet to get into a bit of a debate due to her unusual appearance and people were convinced it was a black dog statue.


The viral photo is actually a living, breathing dog who is owned to Sandra Pineda, from Quezon City, Philippines. She is a Xoloitzcuintle or Mexican Hairless Dog and was brought home when she was just two-months-old.


Looking at the photos of her on Instagram, people thought this was of a statue. Everyone was mistaken due to her unique look and the fact she doesn’t have hair. However, not everyone is convinced by her unusual looks. While many people love her appearance, some think she looks ugly or odd.


Although she looks serious and even intimidating to some, she’s actually an intelligent, affectionate and playful dog. So, Sandra’s probably got a great bond with her.

  • 2 cups shredded cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2 diced jalapeños seeds removed
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 2 thinly sliced scallions (optional)

Preparation:

At first, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a loaf pan (9×5 or 9×6). Cook your bacon in it, until it is all nice and crisp. When done, remove the pan from the oven and place the bacon on a paper towel to remove the excess grease. Allow the bacon to cool and then crumble it.

Now, whisk the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar all together in a small bowl, set aside. Next, take a larger bowl and mix together the cream cheese, shredded cheese, jalapenos, scallions, and bacon. Combine well.

Add your flour mixture to the cheese mixture along with the milk, egg, and melted butter. Mix well. Next, add the mix to the greased loaf pan, and bake for 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out dry.

Cool completely in the pan, then transfer to a wire cooling rack. Slice and take out a piece whenever you want.

Fireworks can be fun for humans, but dogs don’t think so. The flashing lights and booming noises of fireworks can frighten and distress them. They will run out of home and will be found lost and confused the next day. However, there are some clever canine friends who know how to stay calm during fireworks.

Meet Kimbo, a golden retriever puppy who lives in New York City with his loving parents. He loves all the activities in the city and is always ready for a new adventure. For this reason, the noise and bustle of the city never much bothered him. But recently, he and his human, Marco, moved to a new neighborhood in Brooklyn, where people would celebrate Fourth of July Fireworks.

Kimbo was pretty nervous when the booming noises of the first fireworks sounded. He couldn’t stop barking, so Marco helped him calm his firework anxiety by rubbing his ears and giving him treats. But then suddenly, the barking stopped. Everyone went to see what happened to Kimbo and this is what they found:

Kimbo had climbed into the tub and a sweet 4-year-old girl, the daughter of Marco’s friend had decided to put all his favorite toys into the tub. Kimbo rested his head all his toys until the last fireworks burst. And soon, Kimbo was his normal, happy self again.

Heartbroken Dog Waits On Bridge For Four Days After Witnessing His Owner Jumping Into River

A devoted dog in China has gone viral this week after a resident surnamed Xu shared photos of the dog sitting on the pavement of Yangtze Bridge in Wuhan on social media.

In the photos, you could see the dog sat on the bridge and kept staring longingly out into the river. As it turned out, he was waiting for his owner who took his own life by jumping into the river.

According to reports, the dog followed his owner to the bridge and witnessed this heartbroken sight on May 30. The bridge officers checked the surveillance footage and confirmed this.

Xu expressed on social media about his wish to adopt the dog and to give him a forever happy home. Sadly, the dog refused to eat or drink anything Xu gave him. The good man tried to pick up the dog, but the pooch got scared and ran away from him. It is clear that the dog still hopes that his beloved owner would come back.

When Du Fan, the director of Wuhan Small Animal Protection Association (Wuhan SAPA), came across Xu’s post, he and other volunteers started looking for the animal. He also urged people to help if they have some useful information about the dog.

“We still hope to find a new owner for the dog. We think it’s too sad for such a loyal dog to stray on the streets,” Du Fan said.

Thousands of people on social media were brought to tears because of the pooch’s devotion. Although we don’t know what drove the dog’s owner to jump into the river, we hope that the loyal dog will get another chance to live in a happy home with a loving family.

Adopted Dog Walks 40 Miles To Find Her Way Back To Her Foster Mom

Seneca Krueger is a dog lover who works as a psychotherapist and an animal volunteer in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She specializes in helping rescued dogs and fostering them until they can find forever homes. Until now, she has fostered over 30 dogs, but none of them have touched her heart like a dog named Zelda.

“Out of 30, 40 foster dogs, what happens is you love them, and then you let them go and you take the next one,” Krueger shared. “And with Zelda, I adopted her out and spent three days crying. I felt like I had lost my dog.”

Zelda is a 6-year-old German Shepherd mix whom Krueger rescued and fostered last year. According to Krueger, Zelda was an especially difficult case. “She came with anti-anxiety medications,” Krueger told The Dodo. “Zelda paced. All day long she was either pacing or hiding.”

Thankfully, the kind woman helped Zelda learn to trust people again. After several months of tender loving care, the dog came out of her scared shell and was ready to find a good home.

“As Zelda began to gain a little more confidence, I decided it was time for her to find her forever home,” Krueger said. “This is what you are supposed to do as a dog foster; help them adjust and then happily say goodbye as they go and live their best lives.”

When Krueger took Zelda to new home, she had to pull over to the side of the road because she couldn’t hold her tears. “For the first time in my 12 years of dog fostering, I felt like I had given away my dog.”

After saying goodbye to Zelda, Krueger was devastated and cried for days, but she was happy as the dog found her new home and loving owners. However, after just ten days in her new home, Zelda disappeared. She had gone missing after slipping her leash. Krueger immediately got involved with searching Zelda.

Over two months later, Krueger got word that Zelda had been seen in Minneapolis. She came to confirm and realized that Zelda was trying to return to her. The dog walked 40 miles over 97 days to find her way back to her foster mom.

Zelda wanted to live with her foster mom, so she found her way back home. The family who adopted the dog was touched by the story, so they agreed to let Krueger keep Zelda and the adoption is now official.

Krueger was thrilled to have her dog back, and Zelda couldn’t be happier to be with her mom again. “She was mine again, and I was more determined than ever to find her,” Krueger said.
