Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops): Hoopoes are colourful birds found across Africa, Asia, and Europe, notable for their distinctive “crown” of feathers. Three living and one extinct species are recognised, though for many years all of the extant species were lumped as a single species—Upupa epops. In fact, some taxonomists still consider all three species conspecific. Some authorities also keep the African and Eurasian hoopoe together, but split the Madagascar hoopoe. The White-cheeked Turaco (Tauraco leucotis):is found in Eritrea, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. A striking, crested head describes most of the 23 turaco species. On the white-cheeked turaco, the rounded blue-black crest has hairlike feathering which is elongated and slicked back. Prominent red eyerings also stand out. Lacking feathering, they are composed of wattles: a single row of tiny ones below the eye; two or three rows of larger wattles above and to the sides. In front of the eye is a roundish white patch. Legs are grayish-black. Toes are semi-zygodactylous. That is, the outer toe is normally at a right angle, but can be switched backwards or forwards. Claws are short and sharply curved. There are two subspecies: T.l. leucotis is described above. T.l. donaldsoni has a crest that is green towards the front and dull crimson at the back. Wings are a dull violet-blue. Indian White-eye (Zosterops palpebrosus): The Oriental White-eye (Zosterops palpebrosus) is a small passerine (aka songbird) that has a characteristic white ring of feathers around its eyes. This residential species occurs in a wide range of habitat, from forests, mangroves to urban parks and gardens. It is also well-known for its melodious song, thereby making it highly sought after by the caged bird trade. In Singapore herself, the high levels of poaching in the 1970s played a role in a local extinction event. However, the population of Oriental White-eyes rebounded to healthy levels but is suspected to be made up of both native and non-native individuals that were escaped or released from the cage bird trade. Green Broadbill (Calyptomena viridis): Green Broadbill (Calyptomena viridis) is a species of bird in the Calyptomenidae family. The bird is about 17 cm long, plumaged in brilliant green with a black ear patch, widely gaped bill, rounded head, short tail and three black bars on each wing. The beak itself is very weak and almost hidden by the crest above it. Both sexes are similar. The female is duller and has no black markings on its ear patch and wing coverts. Brahminy starling (Sturnus pagodarum): The brahminy myna or brahminy starling (Sturnia pagodarum[2]) is a member of the starling family of birds. It is usually seen in pairs or small flocks in open habitats on the plains of the Indian subcontinent. This myna is pale buff creamy with a black cap and a loose crest. The bill is yellow with a bluish base. The iris is pale and there is a bluish patch of skin around the eye. The outer tail feathers have white and the black primaries of the wings do not have any white patches. The adult male has a more prominent crest than the female and also has longer neck hackles. Juveniles are duller and the cap is browner. Photo credit: DrBasawant GAnnigeri

Grandala in (Grandala coelicolor): Often seen swirling in flocks above mountain passes, scrubby alpine forests, and highland meadows, this large thrush is unlike any other. Adult male is a deep, almost eye-searing blue with jet-black wings. Females and immatures are brown with white streaks all over the head and underparts and weak white bars on the wings. Long-billed and sharp-winged profile, along with flocking behavior, is more reminiscent of starlings than thrushes. Photo credit: Sambath Subbaiah

Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata): The blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is a talkative, colorful bird commonly seen at North American feeders. The species name aptly translates as “crested blue chattering bird.” Male and female blue jays have similar coloration. The blue jay has black eyes and legs and a black bill. The bird has a white face with blue crest, back, wings, and tail. A U-shaped collar of black feathers runs around the neck to the sides of the head. Wing and tail feathers are barred with black, light blue, and white. As with peacocks, blue jay feathers are actually brown, but appear blue because of light interference from the feather structure. Striated Heron (Butorides striata): Butorides is a genus of small herons. It contains three similar species, the Green Heron or Green-backed Heron, Butorides virescens, the Dwarf Bittern (Butorides sturmii), and the Striated Heron, Butorides striatus. A fossil species, Butorides validipes, is known from the Early Pleistocene of Florida. Adults of both extant species are about 44 cm long, and have a blue-black back and wings, a black cap and short yellow legs. Juveniles are browner above and streaked below, and have greenish-yellow legs. The species have different underpart colours, chestnut with a white line down the front in Green Heron, and white or grey in Striated. Both breed in small wetlands on a platform of sticks often in shrubs or trees, sometimes on the ground. Butorides herons stand still at the water’s edge and wait to ambush prey. They mainly eat small fish, frogs and aquatic insects. They sometimes drop food on the water’s surface to attract fish. Photo credit: ZW Young.

Lady Amherst’s Pheasant (Chrysolophus amherstiae): The Lady Amherst’s Pheasant is found in SW China and Myanmar. The first specimen was sent to London UK in 1828, by Sarah Countess Amherst, wife of the Governor General of Bengal. The adult male has dark bluish-green mantle, back, scapulars and breast with black scales. The uppertail-coverts are black-and-white, mixed with orange and red. The longer feathers show long, pointed orange tips. The rump is buffy-yellow and barred bluish-green. The long, arched, pointed tail is white with black bars and vermiculations. Throat and foreneck are blackish. The belly is white whereas vent and undertail-coverts are white barred black. On the head, face, chin and forecrown are dark bluish-green. Cuban Tody (Todus multicolor): A small, colorful bird with a distinctly big-headed appearance. The most brightly colored member of the genus, the Cuban Tody has bright green upperparts with gleaming yellowish-green supercilia, yellow lores, red throat, pinkish flanks, whitish belly, and bright yellow crissum. This species is the only member of the genus occurring in Cuba, where it is widespread across a diversity of habitats and often abundant where it occurs. As is the case with other Todus, this species nests in holes burrowed in clay embankments, occasionally in a rotten trunk or even at the entrance to limestone caves. Photo credit: Karlos Ross

Booted Racket-tail (Ocreatus underwoodii): The Booted Racket-tail is simply a marvel of nature. It has a long tail, which is composed of bare rachises ending in a wide racket-like structure. At first glance, it can resembled the Long-tailed Sylph, but the tail’s shape is unmistakable once taken notice. The long, slim tail ending in a wide feather reminds me of a Motmot, albeit a very small one. Other than its most conspicuous trait, it has white feathers covering its legs, which explains why it is called Booted. The body is mostly green but iridescent like many hummingbirds, making it change in coloration with the view angle. The black bill is straight and short. Photo credit: James Gan

Crested Barbet (Trachyphonus vaillantii): The crested barbet has the nickname “fruit salad” for its random, mixed plumage coloration and its partially frugivorous diet, though these birds will eat much more than fruit. A distinctive and common barbet, these members of the Lybiidae bird family are great birds to see for any birder visiting their range in southern Africa. Discovering more crested barbet facts can help you be even more excited about this unique bird, and more eager to add it to your life list. Photo credit: Marc Guyt

Green-crowned Brilliant (Heliodoxa jacula): Fairly large hummingbird, sleek and long-tailed with straight bill. Male is entirely emerald green with small blue throat patch only visible at some angles. Female has spotted green breast; note conspicuous white mustache stripe and white spot behind eye. POLICE DOG KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY TO BE BURIED IN A CUSTOM PAINTED CASKET !

A specially designed coffin will be used to honor the dog next week. Includes a portrait of a dog and an American flag…

A Utah paint shop that specializes in motorcycles and classic cars has designed a customized coffin for a fallen police dog.

Hondo, a K-9 from the Herriman City Police Department, was shot while helping police officers who arrested a fugitive in Salt Lake City on Feb. 13. Hondo sustained a gunshot wound to the sternum and died at a nearby veterinary hospital.

The police department contacted Rawtin Garage with an urgent request to honor Honda’s life: a custom coffin…

It took 24 hours for the store to complete the coffin and they didn’t charge for their work. Their services usually require a two-month waiting period.

It’s hard work, but there’s an incredible sense of satisfaction, Ward told the station according to FoxNews. This dog is truly a hero.

In a strange way, it was a kind of spiritual experience, Eccles, an artist who drew dogs by hand, told KSL-TV. You feel like, when you’re done, you’ve really met Honda.

Hondo assisted his partner, a sergeant. Ben Ricks, with over 100 crimes arrested. He was ranked at the top of the best K-9s in the state of Utah, and according to Carr, he placed first in international tests in 2018.

The police chief had the following to say at a February 14 press conference: “PSD Hondo was a true warrior then his actions ensured that his loving friend and partner Ben [Ricks] would able to return home to his wife, children, and HPD family. We mourn the loss of our member of our family but we remember the sacrifice.”

Hondo’s memorial service was held on Saturday.

POOR PUP CRAWLED TO SIDE OF ROAD CRYING IN PAIN AFTER HIT AND RUN UNTIL HELP ARRIVED !

In the Rio Grande Valley in Texas on Friday, a baby dog was spotted lying on the side of the road for at least five hours barely ready to move.

He was hit by a car and managed to crawl to the edge of the road – reports from casual observers said the dog was screaming in pain, but no one stopped to help him.

“God, he’s so scared. He will spend the night there after being hit by a car. He stayed there for hours in the middle of nowhere and dragged the body along the side of the road. He desperately needs salvation and a breadwinner, ” – a sort volunteer rescuer posted on social media posing for help.

Fortunately, social media quickly rushed to the rescue and helped transfer the puppy to Red Fern Animal Rescue, a nonprofit rescue animal in Denver, CO that rescues animals from the euthanasia list.

The man had never told the children what work he had done

A man had never told his children what he did to survive. One day the little girl asked him and he answered calmly and with tears in his eyes.

He was a laborer. Every day before going home, he stopped at a public restroom and washed himself so that his children would not see him dirty. It was important for him that his daughters were educated and went to school.

He wanted them to have respect for themselves and not to be seen differently from others.

Every time he got money, he didn’t buy a blouse for himself but bought books for the girls. “I only asked that they earn my respect in return for our relationship. I used to work in cleaning.”

It was the day the little girl was going to apply for college and the payment hadn’t been made yet. That day the man did not work.

“I was unable to work. I was seated by the trash can, making a concerted effort to keep the tears from escaping my eyes. My coworkers were all staring at me, but nobody approached me to start a conversation. I was miserable because I had been unsuccessful. When I came back home, my daughter was going to confront me about the cost of admission, and I had no idea how I was going to answer her. My family has a low income. My belief was that a person with a low income could never have anything nice happen to say.”

When your coworkers finished turning and you saw him sad, they approached you and told him what he had. He explained how the work was and they gave him the day’s earnings. The man was very happy and hurried to go home. This time he did not take a shower but simply changed his clothes out of happiness.

His three oldest daughters are now in college and work on their own to pay for it. Only the little girl works part-time.

Today the little girl helps her father and all his friends. When asked why she is doing this, she says:

“All of you starved for me that day so that I could become what I am today, pray for me that I can feed you all, every day.”

When you have such a child, how can you be poor?

Loving duck won’t let anything hurt his favorite little boy

Apart from the toy duck, this little boy has the right one in his company.

Jennifer Young, while her son was still very young, decided to bring one duck as a new member of the family. That was in 2016.

She never expected this little duo to develop a very good relationship so quickly.

Mr. T and Bee

Bee, duck Beaker, and Tylor have been inseparable friends since her arrival in this family. The first word he uttered in life was “duck”.

Mr. T and Bee

As Young told The Dodo, they literally did everything in pairs, from sleeping to eating. He further said that Bee, thankfully, was not hard to train with a belt.

Mr. T and Bee

From morning till night they did not separate. Bee was constantly by his side and followed him everywhere.

Mr. T and Bee

Bee would often want some of the food Tyler eats, and he always came up with some special ways to throw her a piece.

They are together even when they tidy Tyler’s room, but they do not hide the guilt of either. They know they are equally guilty.

Mr. T and Bee

It’s amazing how much Bee cares about this little boy. If Tyler cries and someone holds him in their arms, Bee is always there, making sure nothing bad happens to him.

Mr. T and Bee

To Young this is not the first duck he has had, but he is the first to be with them in the house, so he also has diapers as well as a little boy.

He says he used to laugh when he saw ducks with people having diapers, and now it’s his daily routine. Bee is very cute and smart like cats or dogs.

Mr. T and Bee

Tyler adores Beaker and probably can’t imagine life without him now.

Bored Baby Whale Sneaks Off From Sleeping Mom To Give Diver The Best Day Of Her Life

Once-in-a-lifetime experience

It’s so beautiful and rare and just touches your heart.

Every generation goes through a naughty moment.

And it’s not only humans because animals have the tendency to get up to no good when they’re not under the watchful eye of a parent. Just like teens who sneak out or come home past curfew while the adults are sleeping, young whales like to veer off course when mom is taking a nap!

Australian photographer Eamon Porter was out with his drone camera when he caught an already beautiful moment of a mama humpback whale with her baby by her side.
The bigger whale isn’t moving. She’s fine, she’s just sleeping, but the baby whale isn’t tired. Not one bit. The young whale is ready to take advantage of every second mom’s eyes are closed by splashing and exploring the area. There are two divers nearby fascinated by what they get to see, enjoying the show from a safe distance.

But then the baby whale starts to get curious… Who are these strange animals so close by? Could they be new friends? Things to play with? You betcha!

Leaving mom behind, the precocious teen swims over to go frolic with the divers. They appear to be way more fun anyways! What happens next is truly exciting.

It’s so beautiful and rare and just touches your heart.

Given how agressive whale and dolphin mothers are about protecting their calves, this would make me very nervous.

Please believe mom knew she’s just letting baby have a lil fun

Right after the encounter, the whale swims back to mom who is totally unaware that anything happened, the same way a sly teenager would get away with a little trouble…!

They’re very lucky mom didn’t wake up and feel thr.eat.ened enough to protect her baby.
But a beautiful experience anyway!

Horse Spent Her Life In A Stall, Hooked Up To Machines. Now, She Gets To Enjoy Her First Snowfall

Mares in the pregnant mare urine (PMU) industry spend decades in stalls, impregnated and hooked up to machines to collect their urine.
The urine is used in many human medications. Sometimes, the mothers are only allowed three months with their foals before they’re removed. Some foals join their mothers on the PMU lines, while others are sent to slaughter.

The Duchess Sanctuary, operated by The Fund for Animals in partnership with The Humane Society of the United States, is a 1,120-acre facility south of Eugene, Oregon, that’s an oasis for about 200 formerly abused, abandoned, neglected, and homeless horses. Many of these horses were mares rescued from the PMU industry, along with their offspring. Other residents include orphaned mustangs, as well as horses rescued from auctions and feedlots.

One of these rescued horses who reside at Duchess Sanctuary got to enjoy the first snow of the year in Oregon. In the video below, you can see her rolling around in the snow and wagging her tail like she’s a big dog. She stands up, shakes the snow off, runs around and then gets right back on her side to roll around again. She LOVES it!

Kind-Hearted Boy Helps Blind Deer Find Food Every Day Before School

Most kids have some sort of morning routine: eat breakfast, check messages, pick out their clothes….lead a blind deer to food.

That’s what this ten-year-old boy chose to do before school every day for a week, taking it upon himself to walk the animal over to a number of nearby grass patches and make sure it had enough to eat.

Inspired by the boy’s kindness, the boy’s neighbor, a Reddit user named bluecollarclassicist, snapped a photo of the duo to share on the Internet, then contacted a local rescue group to see if they could step in to give the deer proper care.

“He showed a lot of love and respect and my wife and I are going to talk to his mom about a way she would want to see his act of kindness rewarded,” bluecollarclassicist wrote on Reddit, after the deer was safely picked up and brought to a wildlife preserve.

“We are going to frame this photo for them and offer to take him to the local wildlife preserve whenever he wants to go.”

As it turned out, many folks in the community had been stepping in to help the animal and lead it away from the road, but the boy was by far the sweetest example.

Vet Tells Woman To Give Up On Her Paralyzed Rabbit But She Says ‘No’

Bertha the rabbit lost her ability to walk after he hips collapsed this past May. Melanie James was told by her vets to put Bertha down, but not wanting to give up on her pet, James decided to try something she had seen work for dogs before.

The devoted pet owner created a specially-designed wheelchair to give her a new lease on life.

James, who adopted Bertha as a baby four years ago, said: “When the vet said the nicest thing to do would be to put her down, she still had so much life. “I’ve actually seen dogs in wheelchairs and I thought ‘if it works for a dog, then why not a rabbit?’”

Bertha has adapted well to the device and rolls through the garden and home. James is hopeful that Bertha’s condition is improving. “Hopefully, within the not-too-distant future, she will regain mobility herself,” James said. “The vet and myself can’t believe how well the chair’s actually working.”

Baby Elephant Rescued From A Well After Being Trapped Inside For More Than Hour

For all those who argue that animals don’t experience emotional pain, and don’t have empathy, or experience love, they should read our post today. This is the heart-wrenching moment a baby elephant was rescued from a well after desperately trying to dig itself free with its trunk.

The tiny little baby was wandering in the forest in Kerala, India when it fell into a well. Due to the disused water well, the baby was unable to climb out and became distressed.

Its trumpetting and crying woke up residents of Kuttampuzha village, and they immediately contacted a rescue team for help.

The rescuers used an excavator to dig away at the side of the well and create a makeshift path to enable the baby elephant to climb free. They did everything carefully to avoid crushing the baby with the backhoe of the excavator.

Villagers stood around to watch the elephant escape and cheered when it managed to pull itself free. Because of being tired, the baby struggled to stand up at first before eventually climbing out of the well. Thankfully, the elephant was safe and only had minor injuries.

The mother elephant and the rest of the herd stood nearby the well when the villagers and rescuers saved the baby elephant. When the baby climbed out, the elephant family quickly came to meet their beloved member.

Their reunion melted everyone’s hearts. Before running into the forest, the mother even turned toward the people and raised her trunk as if she wanted to thank them for rescuing her baby. She was like, you guys are amazing. Thanks for rescuing my baby.

Woman Hits Back At Cruel Trolls Who’ve Accused Her Of Animal Abuse For Dyeing Her Dog’s Fur Red

Chloe is a TikToker and a pet owner who owns a Great Pyrenees dog named Dandy. She loves her dog so much and often shares his videos using her account @danthebigreddog.

She has an Instagram account, where she often posts Dandy’s pics. Everyone loves Dandy and admired Chloe’s love for her dog until she dyed his fur red.

Despite Dandy looking happy in all the videos, many viewers took offence at Chloe’s action and thought it was dangerous for the poor dog. Some even filled her feed with critical comments and accused her of animal abuse.

“Why dye such a beautiful dog different colors, they are not toys to mess around with,” one person said.

Chloe had to make a video defending herself and hit back at cruel trolls by explaining exactly why she made the decision.

She said that Dandy enjoys the dyeing process and the vegan product she used is not harmful to him in any way. It just makes his fur shiny and soft.

The second reason to keep him red was to keep him from getting stolen as he’s a rare breed.

Chloe said: “Dan loves people and kids but he’s 130lbs so people would get scared of him. Now people don’t get scared of him! They only smile and ask to give him attention. He loves that.”

In another video, Chloe dueted with another TikTok user who ate some dog fur dye to prove the products are completely safe. She used the products of Opawz, which is a dye designed especially for dog and horse hair.

“Permanent Color lasts for more than 20 washes. For creative grooming competition and professional groomers use,” the website reads. “Long-lasting permanent color specially formulated for dog and horse. Provides bright, fashionable and unique color results.”

However, there are still many people who don’t agree with Chloe’s action.

One person commented: “Of course it’s cruel, of course it’s abuse, the only good thing is she’s made it clear to the whole world she’s not fit to own a dog I hope the authorities step in.”

Another added: “How would she like to be dyed red too? Stupid and cruel woman does not deserve such a beautiful dog.”

“It’s not cute and it’s not funny. It’s blatant animal abuse. What if the dye got into his eyes or damaged his skin? What if he got it in his mouth? I think the owner did this for her own need for attention.”

Huge Giraffe That Stuck Up His Neck In Mud Gets Finally Saved By Rescuers

It was lucky anyone at all spotted a giraffe in trouble in a remote region of Kenya — if he hadn’t been found, he might have lost his life.

The huge giraffe had become stuck in mud near Amu Ranch, run by the Lamu Conservation Trust, on the northern coast of Kenya. And even though the enormous animal towered over the rescuers from the Amu Patrol Team and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) who came to help him, they never gave up.

Luckily, a tractor donated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) was a big help in helping this big guy out of the mud.

Saving the giraffe wasn’t just an act of kindness — it was also a little step toward helping giraffes as a species. Over the past three decades, giraffe populations have plummeted by nearly 40 percent, from about 163,000 in 1985 to just over 97,000 in 2015.

“The main threats facing giraffes are habitat destruction, bushmeat poaching and human-wildlife conflict,” Amie Alden, spokesperson for DSWT, told The Dodo. “Few people know that these iconic species are under threat and that, in localized areas, giraffes could soon be driven to extinction. Many are caught in poachers’ traps and snares and face a slow and agonizing death if rescuers like our Vet Units can’t reach them.”

Rescuers from DSWT have helped the KWS with over 180 giraffe rescues to date, saving them from snares and treating spear and arrow wounds — and, in this case, pulling them out of a tight spot.

After three hours of gruelingly difficult labor, the rescuers managed to pull the giraffe out of the mud. And he took a moment to rest on solid ground before walking off — almost like nothing happened.

More Than 100 Neglected Lions Abandoned At South African Facility

While we’ve read great things about South Africa – like stunning beaches, incredible sunsets, wonderful countryside – there is a darker side that will break your heart: the story of the neglected lions. It’s a reminder that there are heartless and greedy people out there who are happy to profit off of poor animals’ suffering, writes blog.theanimalrescuesite.greatergood

According to a variety of sources, more than 100 lions, as well as other exotic animals, have been rescued from an abandoned facility in the North West province, where they were living in cramped spaces and riddled with all kinds of ailments. They had been deliberately left to die since all the greedy b******s wanted was a bag of bones.

National Geographic reports that the scandal broke after an anonymous tipster leaked information to a journalist, who then was able to call the National Council for Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA). The NSPCA is responsible for enforcing all animal welfare legislation in South Africa.

Investigators arrived at the Pienika Farm and were absolutely horrified by what they found. There were 27 lions suffering from mange – a condition in which the animals’ skin gets attacked by parasitic mites. The poor lions had no fur left, and they were living in a space that was dirty, filthy, and overcrowded.

They also noticed that there were three cubs with meningoencephalitis, which is a brain inflammation that leaves animals paralyzed. Very sadly, one of the poor babies had to be euthanized.

Manager of the NSPCA wildlife protection unit, Doughlas Wolhuter, was thoroughly grossed out. He didn’t have the words to express the horrors he’s witnessed. How could anyone ever do that to an animal – wild or domestic?

Sadly, that isn’t the only story like that. In 2015, the documentary “Blood Lions” revealed the darker side of South Africa, reporting that 6,000-8,000 lions live in terrible conditions in captive-breeding facilities throughout South Africa.

The documentary’s narrator, Ian Michler, stated that there more than 10,000 similar stories at the moment.

It all boils down to profit. People in South Africa use these kinds of facilities to provide entertainment for tourists who get to feed and pet the lion cubs. They even get to take selfies too.

Michler further reveals how the lions are killed by US trophy hunters travel to South Africa for their thrill kills.

Michler says that places like the Pienika Farm exist to provide material for the lion bone trade. Lion bones are used as an alternative to tiger bones and in Asia, bones are seen as traditional remedies. Michler also explains that the breeders only need the bones so they don’t need to care about the animals’ appearances they just want their bones. I mean, how cold-hearted is that?

Unfortunately, this isn’t the last heart-wrenching story like this that we’ll be hearing coming out of South Africa. Sadly, lions don’t have any rights, and South Africa is unable to do anything for the captured animals. Experts have also explained that it’s impossible to just set the lions free since they grew up in captivity. So what their fate will be the million-dollar question.
