Actinidia

Actinidia /ˌæktɪˈnɪdiə/[2] is a genus of woody and, with a few exceptions, dioecious plants native to temperate eastern Asia, occurring throughout most of China, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan, and extending north to southern areas of Russian Far East and south into Indochina. The genus includes shrubs growing to 6 metres (20 feet) tall, and vigorous, strong-growing vines, growing up to 30 m (100 ft) in tree canopies. They mostly tolerate temperatures down to around −15 °C (5 °F), and some are much hardier.

The leaves are alternate and simple, with a dentated margin and a long petiole. The flowers are solitary or in axillary cymes, usually white, with five small petals. Most of the species are dioecious with separate male and female plants, but some are monoecious. The fruit is a large berry containing numerous small seeds; in most species, the fruit is edible. In particular, this genus is known for the species Actinidia deliciosa, one of the most common cultivated kiwifruits, and for the hardy ornamental A. kolomikta.

Ice rink fulfills dying dog’s final wish to see snow one last time

When a dog gets older and starts to slow down, it can be hard to realize they might not have much more time left — but that’s all the more reason to make their twilight years as great as possible.

Many pet owners even make a “bucket list” for their old dogs, making sure they get to enjoy life to the fullest before they pass. And recently, one sweet dog got her final wish to play in the snow one last time, thanks to some kind strangers.

Marianna Wilson and Elijah Saltzgaber, from Utah, loved their dog Maggie — and when the 11-year-old dog was diagnosed with cancer in July, they faced the sad reality that their dog might not be around much longer.

But to make Maggie’s final days as wonderful as possible, they made a bucket list of fun activities for her: “We made the decision to take her camping and paddleboarding to get her blissfully tired,” Marianna told FOX 13.

While Maggie got to enjoy some fun summer activities, the owners were saddened that the dog would likely never get to see another winter, her favorite season.

Maggie especially loved to play in the snow — and getting one last snow day was the final item on her bucket list. But while it seemed impossible, the owners set out to make it happen.

While it was unlikely to snow anytime soon, they searched for other solutions. They put out a request on Facebook asking if anyone had a shaved ice machine they could use.

They had a breakthrough when one person suggested a skating rink, as shavings from the ice could be used to create a pile of snow.

They contacted Salt Lake County Ice Center, and they were happy to help make the old dog’s dream come true.

The staff shaved ice from the rink with a zamboni, and even packed and transported it to the family’s home so Maggie could play with it in her backyard over the weekend.

They even put a special sign on the makeshift snowbank, declaring it “MAGGIE’S SNOW.”

According to a Facebook post from Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, Maggie “enjoyed it with her family,” and photos show the dog happily laying on the snow.

According to the post, Maggie has since passed away. Thanks to this sweet act of kindness, she got to fulfill everything on her bucket list, even though she didn’t live to see another winter.

“Sending our love and condolences to Maggie’s family,” Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation wrote. “We appreciate the unique privilege of providing her a little heaven on earth.”

And Maggie’s owners are happy their dog made so many people happy in her final days as well.

“To see people from all walks of life come together for our dog, it’s amazing,” Marianna told FOX 13. “She touched us, and now she gets to touch so many other people. That’s the best way for her memory to live on.”

It’s never easy to lose a pet, but we’re so glad that Maggie got to live life to the fullest in her final days, and got to have one last “snow day” thanks to these kind strangers.

21 Rare Species Of Bats You Probably Didn’t Know Existed

Although current events might make you think differently, bats are really amazing animals. They are the only mammals that can fly, yet a quarter of all mammals are bats. There are more than 1300 species of them. And if you think they’re not good, you’re wrong: They’re great at killing pests, and thanks to all the insects they eat, the use of pesticides is reduced. In the US alone, farmers save millions of dollars because of them.

There’s more: many bats eat nectar, and in doing so, they pollinate plants: over 700 species, many used for food or medicine. They also disperse the seeds, which helps in reforestation. And scientists have studied vampire bats saliva and used it to develop medicines for blood clots and strokes.

Check out below some amazing and bizarre-looking species of bats that you probably didn’t know about.

Stray Dog Jumped Into A Truck And Didn’t Get Out Until He Was Adopted

Stray dogs will always try to take advantage of any opportunity they have to find a family. They are tired of being alone, so when they have the chance to show a person that they want to be with them, they will do so.

So did this gentle pit bull, who when he had the chance to get into an empty truck, where he felt safe and which he presumed belonged to some family, he did not hesitate to go in there and not come out until he had a home.

When Emily and Garrett returned from their yoga class they were surprised to find the hairy one inside their vehicle, lying down. They didn’t understand how he could get in, but there was no way to get him out, since he refused to move, even though he seemed very affectionate.

“This pit bull just jumped into the car. Hey, what are you doing there,” Emily said as she recorded the scene with her phone.

In a video, published by The Dodo, you can see how this couple tries for a period of two hours to get it out without success. They even offered him food and called him to eat outside, but he seemed determined to stay inside. They made sure to keep him hydrated and fed him, while they thought about what to do with him.

With the dog’s refusal there was no other option but to take him with them, after they all became more confident. The idea at first was for everyone to leave and try to find out where this dog came from, and return him to his family. However, after much searching no one claimed the dog.

Although they weren’t looking for a dog, life put Buddy in their path, who from that moment on completed the family.

Buddy loved going out into the woods, but on one of those occasions he got lost for a while. The family was devastated by the situation. They spent many days looking for him until they received a call from a shelter that found him.

Since that time, their relationship with Buddy has solidified and they are now very close. Buddy had a chip installed so he wouldn’t go missing again. Nothing will ever be the same if he’s gone.

Cat Saved Just Hours Before Death Row Won’t Stop Thanking His Rescuer

Life at animal shelters is not fun and games and sometimes if an animal spends too much time without being adopted, he might be put down. Henry the cat was just hours away from death row, until an amazing foster carer from Cat Rescue Newcastle named Adelle rescued him!

“He had a matter of hours before his time was up but we swooped in and did what we do best: saved a life” said the organization. The cutie was so excited and grateful, that he wouldn’t stop cuddling and kissing Adelle, who was also able to find Henry a permanent home, where he currently lives happily!

‘World’s Loneliest’ Shelter Dog Has New Life As A Movie Star

Freya the dog has a pretty sad background story: she used to be a shelter dog, rescued by Freshfields Animal Rescue in England when she was just a puppy and spent 6 years there, watching every other dog in the shelter get adopted but no one took this cutie home, which gave her the title of ‘world’s loneliest dog’.

However, some articles surfaced on Freya and one of them found its way to film director Michael Bay, who decided to bring life and company to Freya by including her in one of his films and in a recent clip released by Paramount Pictures, he claims that “Freya’s doing an amazing job acting.”

Most importantly, and thanks to the exposure the movie gave her, she finally found a loving forever family who loves and appreciates her so we can say Freya is no longer the world’s loneliest dog!

Cat Guides Lost Hiker Down A Mountain In Switzerland

Can you imagine being in the mountains of Switzerland and getting lost? Sure, you could use GPS but those are tricky sometimes and a furry friend who guides you could be the perfect answer. This is exactly what happened to Reddit user sc4s2cg, a man who, while hiking in the Swiss mountains, got lost until the kitten came to the rescue!

“I was checking my map to see how I can get back to the hostel and the only official way down was through a trail that was closed,” he shared. That’s when the cat appeared and guided him down the mountain, even checking back every now and then to make sure the hiker was right behind him.

It also looks like the Swiss feline is a bit experienced in guiding tourists down that very mountain because since sc4s2cg shared his story, other users claimed they met the cat too!

Woman Builds A Stairlift For Her Three Elderly Rescued Pugs, And It’s Adorable

Dogs give us the gift of company and joy for their whole lives, so the least we can do is to provide them with a little comfort in their golden years, when they are already older.

Sonya Karimi, 31, who lives in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, owns three elderly dogs, after she recently adopted Bodhi, who also suffers from a ligament problem in her knee. She decided to build a stairlift for them in her home so they won’t be forced to climb stairs.

Using outstanding construction skills, Karimi used wood and metal parts. Thus, she fixed a base on the steps, which go from the top floor to the bottom. This way, with a box she built, the hairy ones can be mounted and slide from one floor to the other.

As can be seen in the next video, the family helps the four-legged friends in this task of moving from one floor to another. They climb up and slowly descend until they reach the floor. Thanks to this elevator, their knees won’t suffer any more.

Sonya, who is an occupational therapist, has dedicated herself to taking care of her dogs just as she does her patients. They are grateful to have so much help in these years where everything is complicated. But of course she will never leave them alone.

He just won’t leave me alone now,” Will shared but he couldn’t resist the kitten that stole his heart by just approaching him. They Spot A Baby Turtle Crying For Help. Seconds Later, My Heart Was Racing!

The people in the video below were on their way back from a dive on a beautiful summer day somewhere in the Maldives Islands when they spotted a baby turtle on the surface of the water. At first, they were all very excited to jump in and swim with it, but when they got closer, they noticed the turtle was in a dangerous situation. The reptile was entangled in some plastic rubbish and was struggling to move. Luckily things ended well for this turtle, but so many other creatures are living in the ocean among seas of debris. And it’s our fault.

This Woman With Asperger’s Tries To Hurt Herself, But Her Loyal Dog Soothes and Protects Her

In an emotional video, a woman living with Asperger syndrome (an autism spectrum disorder) shows how her dog helped her through an emotional breakdown. The woman was crying in the bathroom, hurting herself, but she was not alone. Her service dog was on high alert. He was trained to deal with this kind of situations. ‘I trained him to alert to depressive episodes and self-harm not both but he alerted. It appears the response is late but it’s actually supposed to be as I’m coming out of the meltdown as I tend to have a panic attack after,’ wrote the woman in the video’s description.
