The birthmark, called congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN), didn’t affect Vienna’s health, but her mom was worried it might bother her emotionally as she grew up. CMN is a condition where a baby is born with a group of harmless pigment cells, and they could have grown as Vienna got older.

The condition Vienna has is rare, and nobody could predict how much the birthmark would grow as she got older. Her mom, Casey, didn’t want Vienna to go through any challenges because of it as she grew up.

Right away, Casey asked the doctors if there was anything they could do about the birthmark. She was worried that if they didn’t remove it, Vienna might be upset with her parents in the future.

Casey, the caring mom, mentioned, “We enjoy watching her grow on her journey, and we look forward to the day she grows up and can express her own thoughts. We’d love her no matter what, even if we kept the birthmark.”

The reason Casey wanted to remove Vienna’s birthmark was that when Vienna was a baby, people would stare at her. Casey noticed that others treated her baby differently from other babies. This made her even more determined to get the birthmark removed.

The NHS (National Health Service) said no to the surgery because they usually say no to surgeries that are not necessary for a person’s physical health. They thought the surgery was cosmetic, not essential.

So, Casey started a fundraising campaign to gather money for the surgery from other sources. In just 24 hours, generous people donated $52,000. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough because hospital costs had gone up a lot due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The young parents needed $27,000 more for the surgery.

They asked for help on GoFundMe again to cover the extra costs for their daughter’s surgery to remove the birthmark.

The concerned mom explained, “Everyone has things they feel unsure about in their body. The doctor said it wouldn’t affect Vienna’s mental health right now. But we didn’t see it that way. She’s starting school at three, and little kids are clever; they notice things like that.”

Now, Vienna is two years old, and her birthmark has been completely removed. The only sign left is a small scar on her forehead. Casey, her mom, regularly updates on her daughter’s healing process and often comments on how ‘gorgeous’ her baby girl is.

Even after they took away the birthmark, the parents went to London to let the surgeon check how well the small scar on Vienna’s forehead had healed. Insights from the 2017 total solar eclipse indicate a troubling surge in fatal car accidents during similar astronomical (and astrological) events. An analysis done by the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto offers a rough forecast, revealing that the upcoming eclipse may show a significant uptick in road fatalities.¹

Dr. Donald Redelmeier, a professor at the University of Toronto and one of the study’s authors, emphasized that “[t]he increased risks likely derive from increased traffic, travel on unfamiliar routes, speeding to arrive on time, driver distraction by a celestial event, drug or alcohol impairment, or eclipse viewing from unsafe roadside locations.” Seems like a bit of a wide net to blame on an eclipse, but the numbers don’t lie.

The research scrutinized the traffic dynamics during the 2017 total solar eclipse, uncovering a problematic pattern. Over the three days during the last eclipse, there were 741 fatalities due to traffic accidents, translating to a staggering 10.3 deaths per hour. By contrast, the corresponding figure for control days stood at 7.9 fatalities per hour, a 31% surge in fatal crash involvement.

I’m an Emergency Room nurse and we’re not allowed to have our phones on us; they’re to be kept in our lockers. A call comes into hospital reception on a private line for me.

Phone: “This is [Teacher] from [School]. There’s been an incident involving [Daughter]. We need you to come in.”

Me: “Is she ill or injured? Can it wait until my shift is over in two hours?”

Phone: “[Daughter] has struck another student. We’ve been trying to call you for 45 minutes. It really is very serious.”

I go to the school and am ushered into the Principal’s office. I see my daughter, her advisor, a male teacher, the principal, a boy with blood around his nose and a red face, and his parents.

Principal: “Mrs. [My Name], how kind of you to FINALLY join us!”

Me: “Yeah, things get busy in the ER. I’ve spent the last hour administering over 40 stitches to a seven-year-old who was beaten by his mother with a metal ladle and then I had to deal with the police regarding the matter. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

(After watching him try to not act embarrassed, he tells me what has happened. The boy had snapped my daughter’s bra and she had punched him in the face… twice. I got the impression they were more angry with my daughter than the boy.)

Me: “Oh. And you want to know if I’m going to press charges against him for sexually assaulting my daughter and against the school for allowing him to do it?”

(They all get jittery when I mention sexual assault and start speaking at once.)

Teacher: “I don’t think it was that serious.”

Advisor: “Let’s not over-react.”

Principal: “I think you’re missing the point.”

(The boy’s mother then starts crying. I turn to my daughter to find out what happened.)

Daughter: “He kept snapping my bra. I asked him to stop but he didn’t, so I told Mr. [Teacher]. He told me to ‘ignore it.’ [Boy] did it again and undid my bra so I hit him. Then he stopped.”

(I turn to the teacher.)

Me: “You let him do this? Why didn’t you stop him? Come over here and let me touch the front of your trousers.”

Teacher: “What?! No!”

Me: “Does that seem inappropriate to you? Why don’t you go and pull on Mrs. [Advisor]’s bra right now. See how fun it is for her. Or on that boy’s mother’s bra. Or mine. You think just because they’re kids it’s fun?”

Principal: “Mrs. [My Name]. With all due respect, [Daughter] still beat another child.”

Me: “No. She defended herself against a sexual attack from another pupil. Look at them; he’s nearly 6 feet and 160 pounds. She’s 5 feet and 84 pounds. He’s a foot taller than her and twice as heavy. How many times should she have let him touch her? If the person who was supposed to help and protect her in a classroom couldn’t be bothered, what should she have done? He pulled her bra so hard it came undone.”

(The boy’s mom is still crying and his dad looks both angry and embarrassed. The teacher won’t make eye contact with me. I look at the principal.)

Me: “I’m taking her home. I think the boy has learned his lesson. And I hope nothing like this ever happens again, not only to [Daughter], but to any other girl at this school. You wouldn’t let him do it to a member of staff so what makes you think he can do it to a girl of 15 is beyond me. I will be reporting this to the school administrators. And if you—” *turning to the boy* “—EVER touch my daughter again I WILL have you arrested for sexual assault. Do you understand me?”

I was so angry, I gathered my daughter’s things and left. I reported it to the School Board, several of whom I know, and was assured it would be strongly dealt with.

My daughter was put into a different class for that subject, away from the teacher and the boy.

The unfortunate reality is that underweight and emaciated dogs frequently end themselves in animal shelters. Witnessing animals suffer till they are nearly unable to stand upsets me.

Some show fondness and trust for humans despite their mistreatment, while others cower in dread at the sight of a rescuer. It is not worth considering occasionally what the latter have gone through.

I find it impossible to think that I would ever want to harm an animal. Moreover, I find it incomprehensible that someone could find any kind of enjoyment in doing this.

Having said that, I believe dogs possess a sixth sense that allows them to distinguish between good and bad people.

People who work with animals will know how important it is to provide a neglected animal the opportunity to initiate contact. It’s normal to want to play and stroke a dog to reassure it that you are not dangerous, but this isn’t always the best course of action.

Some people simply cannot comprehend the possibility that a dog who has endured abuse could be taken aback by an unfamiliar person.

Hours from now, Edie, a mixed-breed abandoned dog, would be put to sleep. It had been a very long time since anyone had shown her any concern, and she was afraid of people. She was seriously undernourished, and her fur was a mess.

To give Edie another chance, you had to be a true animal lover.

As they approached, they attempted to discern the object of the group’s attention, but it was the most peculiar sight.

The monster was motionless and absolutely frozen.

The boys were aware that they needed to take rapid action to save the animal, but they were clueless on how to assist the unfortunate creature.

According to the Canadian news outlet CBC, friends Jaydon Pettipas and Aidan Hart made the surprising discovery near the town of Saint Andrews in New Brunswick.

Before the day was out, the two teenage boys would be praised for their bravery.

They had to investigate what was causing the people to stop and gaze when they discovered a number of them clustered together. However, they were unsure of what they were looking at even up close.

The animal appeared to be frozen solid and was hardly identifiable.

An insulated foam-covered squirrel was stuck beneath an automobile. They were aware that its time on earth was limited.

“It was unrecognizable,” 15-year-old Jaydon stated to CBC Canada.

The lads walked inside a grocery store and picked up a tiny milk crate to keep the squirrel because they understood it needed care but didn’t know how to provide it.

As time went on, the situation worsened and nobody nearby could advise the guys on what to do either.

The youngsters called friends and relatives, pleading for assistance.

Jaydon’s mother intervened next, calling a veterinarian 20 miles away and requesting that the animal be brought in right away.

“This is unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” Dr. Melanie Eagan of the St. George Veterinary Clinic exclaimed.

The squirrel, according to her, could only barely move its back legs because it was so covered in insulation foam.

The squirrel would not have lived if the boys hadn’t moved so swiftly and if their mother hadn’t assisted them in bringing it inside.

The cat would have been residing in someone’s shed, garage, or cellar, the veterinarian surmised, and it became tangled in the stuff.

“Become distressed”

“This little guy ran through it when it was still wet, probably because someone was patching up a hole to keep a draft out,” she said. “However, that material solidifies quite rapidly, so it wouldn’t have taken him long to feel distressed.”

She added that in order to remove the foam from the animal’s fur, one needed to be patient and use rubbing alcohol. The animal lost some fur as she proceeded to brush it out.

Since then, the squirrel has been allowed to return to the wild.
