Preparation:

At first, peel the potatoes and preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (220°C). Now, in order to make your Hasselback potatoes perfect, you can place them between 2 chopsticks to help with stability and knife guidance. Then cut the potatoes thinly, crosswise slices approximately three-quarters down into the potato, but not all the way through to the bottom.

Next, brush both potatoes with olive oil and place them on a baking dish. Season them with salt and pepper. Bake them for about 30 minutes, until they become soft.

Lastly, remove the baked sweet potatoes from the oven, allow to cool before serving, and enjoy.

To visit his friend, Rick Anderson has to strap on an oxygen tank, put a regulator into his mouth and dive into the ocean off the coast of Nobbys Beach in New South Wales, Australia.

Anderson has a 6-foot female Port Jackson shark as a buddy. Anderson recognizes her by her marks, even though she doesn’t have a name.

Anderson claims that she always recognizes him.

Anderson told The Dodo, “I started playing with her around seven years ago when she was just a pup about 6 inches long.” “I approached her slowly so as not to startle her, then softly patted her. I’d cradle her in my palm and whisper soothingly to her through my regulator after she’d gotten used to me.”

“I did this each time in the first season she was here,” he said. “Then over the following seasons, she’d recognize me and would swim up to me for a pat and cuddle. She soon got used to me — to the point where she will swim up to me when I’m going past, and tap me on the legs until I hold my arms out for her to lay on for a cuddle.”

“Most first-time divers can’t believe what they’re seeing,” he continued. “I don’t feed her or any of the other sharks I play with; I treat them as if they were dogs.”

Port Jackson sharks are a lot smaller than great white sharks, but any kind of shark tends to ignite fear, especially as the media often wrongly portrays sharks as dangerous to people. In reality, people are far more dangerous to sharks — it’s estimated that people kill 73 million sharks per year.

Anderson, who’s been scuba diving for more than 30 years and runs a dive school, hopes his friendship with this Port Jackson shark will make people less fearful of sharks.

“The most common misunderstanding about sharks is that they are all mindless murderers waiting for humans to enter the ocean so they may be consumed,” Anderson added.

Anderson dives with a variety of sharks, including banjo sharks, grey nurse sharks, tiger sharks, bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, and even the occasional great white shark.

“I have always felt comfortable swimming with these animals,” he said.

Just ask Emmelina Austin and her new friend, this gorilla mom named Kiki.

Austin and her family decided to take their 1-month-old baby, Canyon, to Franklin Park Zoo in Boston another day.

The Austinians encountered Kiki, a 7-month-old gorilla named Pablo, as he passed by the gorilla cage.

“My wife mentioned that she felt like she could understand their bond and could see how much she cared for Pablo, since she is a mother now herself,” Michael Austin, Canyon’s dad, told The Dodo.

“My wife held up our son to show to Kiki, who was on the other side of the enclosure … then Kiki grabbed Pablo and put him on her leg to carry him over to us.”

Emmelina and Kiki sat with their baby inches apart for the next several minutes, connecting as mothers despite the language barrier between them:

“[Kiki] was talking to us with her hands,” Michael said. “Pablo even pushed his face up to the glass at one point and they watched him, noses touching, together. My wife and I both had tears in our eyes.”

It was a moment the young family won’t soon forget.

“”It was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had,” Michael stated. “What a wonderful memory to pass along to our son one day!”

Duck Is Proud To Show Off Her Giant Floatie Despite Her Inability To Swim

Keeper was discovered walking around in a Walmart parking lot, bewildered and alone. Because the parking lot was not near any water, it’s quite probable that she was thrown there. Fortunately, Keeper was seen by a concerned woman, who contacted Alyssa’s Animal Sanctuary to see if they could assist.

“She is a Pekin duck so she can’t fly, so to be hanging around a place where there is no water nearby is weird for a duck to start but then this woman noticed she was staying up near the doors, near where people were at, like she wanted someone to help her, and when she noticed she had difficulty walking and had a bad limp, that’s when she decided to call us,” Alyssa Barry, founder of Alyssa’s Animal Sanctuary, told The Dodo.

The sanctuary took Keeper in and discovered that she’s pigeon-toed, a disability that may have led to her being abandoned. As they worked on getting Keeper settled in with the other ducks at the sanctuary, they quickly realized she had another issue that greatly affected her.

 

“We saw she had problems swimming immediately away,” Barry told The Dodo. “When her feathers were wet, the water did not bead off of her as it should have, instead soaking her and making her soggy. So her capacity to float and stay above water became challenging for her, and as she paddled her feet, her feet would strike one other, causing her to become stressed, so we would pull her out of the water, and we quickly understood that she wouldn’t be able to use our enormous pool.”

After a little research, Barry realized that Keeper was born without a preen gland, which produces oils that make ducks waterproof. Her missing gland on top of her pigeon-toed feet meant that Keeper wouldn’t be able to swim and hang out in the water with the other ducks, as she could end up drowning, and Barry could tell that not being able to be near her new family for most of the day made Keeper sad right from the start.

 

“She of course has a kiddie pool that she can get into anytime and stand in, but ducks like to stay with their paddlings (their group/family), so every day I would watch as her family would go up into the pool and she would sit at the bottom of the ramp by herself until they came back down,” Barry said. “It made me sad to watch her sit alone at the bottom of the ramp while her family played in their pool all day, and just wait for them to come back down out of the pool.”

Barry was stumped as to how to allow Keeper to spend the entire day with her family while being secure — until one day, while going through Walmart, she discovered a large floatie looking like a duck.

 

Barry had no idea if the floatie would work out or not, but she decided it was worth a try. She brought it back to the sanctuary and tried to teach Keeper how to use it, and after a little trial and error, the little duck became a pro.

“She learned very quickly that she could balance perfectly fine on it, and she WANTED to be on it,” Barry said. “It only took her a few minutes to realize that now she was in the pool with her family and she was perfectly content and sat there all day long. It just sort of became this daily thing, where we would pick her up and put her on her float and she loved it. I think she finally felt like she could be part of her family again.

 

“The other ducks haven’t even tried to come on her floatie or annoy her while she’s on it,” Barry added. “She simply sits on it all day and it blows around the pool in the breeze and it’s amazing!”

Even though Keeper herself isn’t exactly water safe, her family at the sanctuary made sure there was a plan in place in case she ever fell in the pool and someone wasn’t around to help her. There’s an underwater ledge that extends out from the ramp into the pool, so if Keeper accidentally loses her balance and falls in, she can get herself safely to the ledge and then use it to jump back onto her floatie. It’s all been working out really well, but of course, the sanctuary is always trying to come up with ways to make her life even easier.

 

“We’re working on enlarging the ledge to go the length of the pool and making it even more accessible for her,” Barry added. “But her duck floatie has been life-changing for her.”

Keeper may be a little different from the other ducks, but she can accomplish everything they can, owing to her duck floatie, with a little more elegance.

Tarzan and Tanya, the two lions, were thankfully rescued by the ADI, and the pair share an extremely strong bond.

They were taken to a shelter and given the time and care needed to help them recover, before they were sent to their forever home.

ADI flew the lions to a sanctuary in South Africa after they had gotten better. They can now live a life free from fear.

The pair of lions have a massive grassland to run and play on, something that they have been deprived of since they were born.

In one of the sweetest encounters you’ve ever seen, a Golden Retriever befriends a curious whale shark. The two lovely creatures even shared a kiss, with the moment captured on camera by the dog’s human mom!

Australian diver Jade Pursell, is usually taking her dog Sailor on boat trips. But recently, she witnessed a scene she thought she will, after her beloved furry friend met a marine creature, for the very first time. The duo was boating off the coast of Australia, close to the Ningaloo Reef, when a 22 feet long whale shark surfaced next to their boat. Jade’s heart instantly filled with joy, the moment she have seen her dog sharing a very intimate encounter with the whale shark.

“Sailor had never met a whale shark before,” the diver said. “I always hoped she would but that was by far better than I had ever imagined. I was telling her not to touch it but neither of them listened to me. Sailor sniffed and kissed the shark.”

Though initially worried as she had no idea how Sailor would react, Jade’s concerns have disappeared the moment she has seen her dog gently touching her nose with the shark’s.

“I was so happy,” she explained. “To see her meeting a whale shark, I honestly just felt overjoyed. Animals are incredible and it couldn’t have gone any better. My initial worry was that she might take a leap of faith onto the shark or that she would touch it. Once the shark was so close to her I knew I had nothing to worry about.”

Sailor might be the first dog to ever kiss a whale shark, and her mom could not be any prouder. Thankfully, Jade recorded the lovely moment the two animals interact!

“It was such an innocent interaction,” Jade said. “I felt so lucky to see it. To think Sailor is probably the only dog in the world to have kissed a whale shark is pretty special.”

It was definitely love at first sight, as the two won’t stop cuddling each other.

  • 10 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1-1/4 tsp. pepper, divided
  • 1 tbsp. canola oil
  • 1 tsp. minced fresh thyme or 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 4 celery ribs, chopped

Preparation:

At first, you should pat dry your chicken using paper towels. Then, season it with 1/2 teaspoon of pepper and salt. Now, in a large pot over medium heat, heat the oil. Cook your chicken with the skin down for about 3-4 minutes. Remove it from the pot, and take a couple of tablespoons from the dripping for later.

Add in your onions, and cook until softened about 6 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 minute more. Then, add the broth and bring it to a boil. Add your cooked chicken, bay leaves, celery, carrots, and thyme. Reduce the heat to a simmer, put the lid on, and cook for 25-30 minutes.

Photographer Captures Shot Of Adorable Baby Barn Owl Mid-Run

This is the adorable moment a baby owl was captured on camera while running across the grass

Taken by Dutch wildlife photographer Hannie Heere, the 63-year-old was out photographing barn owls when she saw the little guy.

It turns out that barn owlets don’t start flapping their wings until seven weeks old, and can make short flights by eight.

But until then, baby owls need to use their legs to get around and work on developing these muscles.

This particular baby owl decided to do this by going for a run, and thankfully Heere was there to capture the moment for us.

“I was laying on the ground,” Heere says to PetaPixel. “This young bird count not fly yet and was not afraid. I took the picture from a distance of about 5 to 6 meters [~16 feet].”

The photo has gained some popularity since being published online and has been used as a meme across various social networks.

“I was very, very surprised [at how popular the photo has been],” Heere says.
