New Parents, Aged 50 and 61, Welcome First Child: ‘She’s A Miracle Baby’

Wishing to be a parent and being unable to conceive is a tragic heartbreak that many people go through. There are a number of factors that can contribute to infertility and treatments are expensive, making the situation even more challenging. One couple faced these issues for over ten years before they finally became pregnant. Dr. Susie Troxler and her husband Tony from Greensboro, North Carolina, welcomed their first child when they were aged 50 and 61, respectively.

Susie is a psychologist and her husband works at Cone Health. They were married in 2008 and began trying for a baby right away. Getting married later in life decreased their chance of conceiving, and along with some health issues from both husband and wife, the couple began to lose hope their baby would ever come along. It didn’t help that every doctor they talked to about the issue shut them down right away due to their ages.

There are a number of reasons why getting pregnant later in life is not recommended by doctors. Issues like preeclampsia, diabetes, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriages, and even stillbirth are more common in women who conceive when they are older. Susie and Tony knew the risks, but their desire to have a child seemed worth it in the end.

After years of trying fertility treatments the couple still didn’t get pregnant. It wasn’t until they used their last embryo for IVF that they finally got the miraculous news. In Fall 2021, the Troxlers welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their family, and they couldn’t be happier. The Troxlers knew they wanted to be parents, but they didn’t know how difficult it would be to make that happen. “We got married later in life, obviously, and we just assumed we would get pregnant like most people,” Susie said. “One year turned into two, then three, but when it got to be nine, 10, 11 years, we were like, something is up, and I’m not sure what it is.”

With multiple health issues from both Susie and Tony, it seemed that having a baby would be impossible. “I had a boatload of uterine fibroids. I was too old, and Tony had some medical issues, so, between the two of us, there was not going to be a baby,” Susie shared.

Doctors were not very encouraging of the couple’s endeavor either. Susie explained, “They always said it nicely, but bottom line, when you take away all of the official medical jargon, it was a no! They said, ‘it’s not happening, so you’re going to need a whole lot of help.'”

They finally got the help that they needed and after a decade of waiting, the Troxlers welcomed their baby into the world. “Before she was even born, she had me wrapped around her pinky,” laughed Tony. “I love her so much. Every time I look at her, I feel myself just staring at her. It’s amazing!”

The couple could not be more excited now that their little girl is finally here. Susie added, “We are thrilled. Sleep-deprived, but totally beyond worth it. She is a miracle baby.”
