Honey ‘May Be Better Than Antibiotics’ For Curing Coughs And Colds, Study Claims

New research from Oxford University scientists states that raw honey acts similarly to antibiotics, just without the bad side effects. In fact, it’s cheaper and even more effective than many other over-the-counter medicines. In addition, honey was more effective in relieving the symptoms of colds and flu-like illness than the usual commercial remedies.

Researchers have also measured its power against cough suppressants, antihistamines, and painkillers. As a result, they found that its so-called ‘nectar of gods’ had no harmful side effects, but it was ‘superior’ at curing a common cold.

On average, honey halted cough severity by 44%. Besides, there was proof that the sweet treat significantly reduces the recovery period of upper respiratory tract infection. URTIs are common cold-like illnesses that affect the sinuses, nose, pharynx, or larynx.

Additionally, honey reduces the lasting of the symptoms by up to 2 days. Keep in mind that honey is a complex substance and there are so many different types. Meaning you could have different results with each type of honey.

Even though honey it’s a safer and more readily available alternative to antibiotics, you need to avoid it if you have allergic reactions. Also, infants under 1 should not consume it.

Since honey is so beneficial for your health, it’s best to use it to replace other forms of sugar. However, keep in mind that honey should only be enjoyed in moderation. Generally, 2-3 tablespoons of honey a day is safe to consume.
