Diver Filming Sardines Nearly Swallowed By Bryde’s Whale

Talk about Jonah and the Whale! Diver Rainer Schmimpf was filming the annual sardine run in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, when he saw something massive coming up from the depths straight towards him. It was a 40-ton Bryde’s whale!

The diameter of the whale’s mouth was big enough to swallow a car let alone a person. With sharks scattering out of whale’s path, Rainer couldn’t get out of the way in time. He thought he was a goner! But the whale must have noticed Rainer, because the diver said that the whale diverted his path at the last minute, narrowly avoiding swallowing him.
