Heartmelting: Orphaned baby elephant comforted by new family after losing his mum

The emotional moment happened at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust – an elephant orphanage – and it shows once again these creatures are special beyond human imagination.

Founded in 1977 by Dame Daphne Sheldrick, in the memory of her husband, David Sheldrick – the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has rescued and rehabilitated countless orphan elephants over the years. But among them, there was a particularly situation – involving a one-year-old rescue – that melted everyone’s heart.

A couple of year ago, while surveilling the Tiva River area in the Tsavo East National Park,Kenya, by plane, a team from the sanctuary noticed a baby elephant wondering all alone on the river’s banks. They immediately realized something’s wrong, so a rescue team was sent on the field. Soon they got there, the rescuers came across an exhausted calf that was desperately crying for his mum. Unfortunately, the mother was long gone, but luckily for him, he meet the nicest people.

Once they brought him at the orphanage, the one year-old elephant, later named Mukkoka undergone a medical evaluation, the he was properly fed with the Sheldrick orphanage’s magical milk formula and within days he miraculously recovered. Nevertheless, life is nothing but tough for an orphan elephant, so the volunteers decided to introduce Mukkoka to the her, hoping he’ll find at least some little comfort.

But the way his new family greeted him at first sight, left everyone speechless. Just like they all new about what he has been through, the whole herd gathered around him and gently touched him with their trunks, like they were saying – “baby, you are not alone anymore, we are here for you!” The image of the moment quickly won everyone’s heart.

“They immediately enveloped him and led him out into the forest to meet the rest of the nursery herd,” Rob Brandford, executive director at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust said. “The greeting he was met with was a warm one, with the other babies reaching out their trunks to comfort and welcome Mukkoka as a new family member.”

When Titus was two years old, Jimenez adopted him from the Austin Animal Center, Austin’s sole municipal animal shelter.

He had no intention of obtaining a pit bull, but he fell in love with Titus when he observed shelter volunteers strolling him around the yard.

Jimenez told The Dodo, “He was bouncing and smiling, and I thought, ‘Man, that’s the one I want.”

Lewis and Titus were inseparable for the next five years, and Lewis couldn’t picture his life without him. Jimenez described him as “like my huge old baby.” “He’s a part of who I am.”

However, something happened last year that drove them apart. Lewis was told that he wouldn’t be able to retain Titus.

“The management firm informed him he had to get rid of Titus or he’d be evicted,” Jennifer Olohan, Austin Animal Center’s communications and media manager, told The Dodo.

Jimenez didn’t have somewhere else to go and didn’t know anybody who could care for Titus while he looked for a new location, so he had no choice but to return him to the shelter.

The shelter employees weren’t sure if Jimenez would return for Titus at first. “From our perspective, we’re not allowed to detain pets because we constantly hear owners claim they’re going to come back, but then they don’t,” Olohan explained.

Simultaneously, the shelter workers observed how difficult it was for Jimenez to relinquish Titus, even though Jimenez said it was only a temporary situation.

Titus, on the other hand, struggled to acclimate to the shelter. According to Olohan, he was in excruciating pain.

“The shelter is a very stressful environment for dogs,” Olohan explained. “Some dogs are better at handling it than others, but Titus was not one of them. He was quite tense. He was excellent when you took him out of his kennel – very lively and gentle. But he was depressed and forlorn in his kennel.”

Jimenez and his family paid Titus as many visits as they could, but it was always an emotional experience for everyone.

“He would become overwhelmed and depressed,” Jimenez added. “The volunteers would jot down things like, ‘Titus isn’t himself,’ and so on. It just strengthened my resolve to do whatever it took to free him.”

The hardest aspect of each visit was coming to an end. “As they were leaving, the employees would see them in tears,” Olohan recalled. “As a result, the entire scenario was sad.”

Titus was at the shelter for four months, but Jimenez never gave up hope of getting him out.

Finally, Jimenez and his family were able to relocate to a new location where they could keep Titus. According to Jimenez, everything worked out for the best because Titus now had a yard to play in.

Olohan said, “Everyone was extremely, really emotional.” “Titus was ecstatic, as did Lewis. Everyone was sobbing, and we had some employees and volunteers there. Some individuals were already aware of their narrative and were aware that Lewis was “waiting in the wings” for Titus.”

Their reunion was filmed by a photographer, and the photographs went viral after the Austin Animal Center published them on Facebook. Jimenez is shown embracing Titus, who has a large doggie smile on his face.

“I was completely overwhelmed,” Jimenez said. “I was thinking about a lot of things.”

After a – now viral – video showed them boarding a tiny plane with 27 pups, a group of dog enthusiasts are being hailed as heroes.

The cute canines were scheduled to be put down, but three people stepped in and saved them all in the greatest rescue effort we’ve seen in a long time!

Cassandra Bergeron, the lady in charge of the rescue, captured and uploaded the footage, which first surfaced on TikTok. The movie, which was shot a few weeks ago, depicts sights from the 45-minute rescue flight from Alabama to Florida.

The video description reads, “Guess how many pups we rescued?” Then there are a slew of joyful pups wagging their tails and snuggling with the heroes who saved them. On TikTok alone, the touching video has received over 13,5 million views.

“I was in pure bliss. I didn’t want to land,” Cassandra explained for DailyPaws. “I couldn’t stop smiling the entire time.”

Cassandra received a call from a friend urging her to save the puppies, which enabled the life-saving rescue. Due of congestion in the shelter, they were going to be put down.

Cassandra and two of her friends rushed to save the lives of the innocent people, so they contacted Michael Young, a pilot and University of Central Florida professor. He was the appropriate person to contact since as a volunteer with Alabama Puppy Rescue Flights, he saved over 7,000 shelter pups.

After they all joined forces, 27 sweet puppies have been rescued from shelter in Enterprise, and taken by place, to several shelters in Orlando. Each and every puppy has been adopted since the rescue! During the rescue, Cassandra recorded several videos, each one more lovely than the other!
